About the BA in Studio Arts Degree

Why Study Studio Art at Cedarville?

Cedarville's Bachelor of Arts in studio art program will inspire and build upon your creativity while providing a solid foundation in traditional studio disciplines like drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. In this vibrant community of artists and thinkers, you'll expand your skills and explore your artistic voice within the framework of a rich liberal arts education. When you graduate, you'll be ready to use your God-given talents and passion for the arts to become an artist who not only honors God through your work but is also highly skilled, relevant, and well-prepared for a career in studio art.

If you love art and want to hone your creativity and skills without making studio art your major, then Cedarville's studio art minor is the perfect solution! You can pair this minor with any major to build a foundational skill set in studio art while pursuing the program of your choice.

Program Overview

Program Highlights

A Different Kind of Art School — With a liberal arts foundation, high academic standards, and a University-wide dedication to thinking deeply and biblically, we are obviously not a typical art school. With small class sizes and professional, practicing teaching faculty who individually know and care for our students, we are obviously not your typical state school either. We are intentionally and enthusiastically different.

Gospel Focus — As you study studio art, you will work alongside a passionate group of creative believers — fellow students as well as faculty members — who desire to impact the world for Jesus Christ through their calling as artists. The exposure to art and art-making within this creative community will define your materials, refine your craft, and develop your unique artistic voice. We can’t wait to see what you have to say!

Outstanding Facilities — You’ll have the opportunity to learn and create in outstanding facilities, including the Tyler Digital Communication, Carnegie Center for Visual Arts, and Alford Annex.

What Can You Do With a Studio Art Degree?

Our graduates sculpt and draw, paint and curate, photograph and design. Some are developing large followings through social media and have the online sales to prove it, while others choose to work and sell through more traditional galleries.

Many have gone on to earn advanced licensure or degrees, such as the Master of Fine Arts (MFA), and these degrees have opened doors for professional careers in fields like art education and art therapy. Some work for large firms. Some remain their own boss. And some support their independent work through employment not directly related to their degree, understanding that there is often a direct relationship between sacrifice and success.

The details change, but the common thread remains the same: our graduates pursue the call of the Creator on their lives. What could be better than that?

Graduate and professional programs and employers welcome Cedarville University graduates each year. It is important to note that some professional career fields you may pursue require additional education, experience, and/or licensure beyond the completion of your Cedarville University undergraduate degree.

Placement Success

We're proud of our successful graduates! 100% of recent art, design, and theatre graduates were employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation. Check out Cedarville's other placement rates.

Opportunities to Learn Outside the Classroom

Student Recognition and Professional Development — Nearby Dayton, Ohio, enjoys a lively contemporary arts scene and several art museums with substantial permanent galleries as well as routine large traveling exhibitions. For the second year in a row, a Cedarville studio art student has been recognized as a recipient of the Dayton Art Institute’s (DAI) Yeck Fellowship — annually awarded to a select few regional college students, and culminating in a museum show at the DAI. In addition to the DAI, we have placed students in internships with other local arts organizations, including the Springfield Art Museum in Springfield, Ohio.

Creative Community — You can join a student organization that brings students together from across the department — graphic artists, industrial designers, and theatre majors — to share experiences and knowledge.

The Studio, Society of Art + Design — The STUDIO is a student-led organization promoting community and mentoring among art and design students.

American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) — Through AIGA, you will attend annual conferences, listen to multiple speakers in different areas of the country, and participate in various other events that will advance your knowledge of design, its history, and practice.

Student Galleries

Through various on-campus events and galleries, you'll have the opportunity to display your own work!

Student Center Activity Board “Art in the Open” — Cedarville's Student Center Activity Board hosts several student art shows every year known as "Art in the Open."

Annual Art Student Exhibition — The Annual Art Student Exhibition is a juried exhibition featuring work from both graphic design and studio art students.
