Center for Bioethics Releases First Journal Issue

The Center for Bioethics at Cedarville University has released its first peer-reviewed journal, Bioethics in Faith and Practice. The academic journal seeks to serve those interested in health care through a faith-based perspective. 

“The new journal gathers theological perspectives across all branches of Christendom, but is also open to secular submissions that critique a faith-based perspective on medical ethics,” said Dennis Sullivan, M.D., senior editor of the journal and director of the Center for Bioethics.

The most recent issue is available online, and the journal is released twice a year.

Sullivan collaborates with Heather Kuruvilla, Ph.D., professor of biology, who serves as the associate director for the Center for Bioethics and is the managing editor for the journal. In addition, each submission is reviewed by an editorial board of 16 people, four of whom come from outside the university.

Sullivan’s hope for the journal and the Center of Bioethics as a whole is to target the difficult questions Christians are facing in the healthcare profession. This may include topics like: research ethics, end-of-life matters or even the recent controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood. 

The recent Planned Parenthood issue has allowed Sullivan the opportunity to be interviewed by various media outlets about a video that he says “brings to the public eye the naked, ugly underbelly of abortion.”

The main goal of the Center for Bioethics is to provide resources that people of faith can use to engage the culture in a way that ascribes value to all human persons and affirms the sanctity of human life.

Bioethics in Faith and Practice is now accepting submissions.  Submissions should focus on topics that are of interest to professionals. Authors are not required to be full-time academic students or faculty of a university.
