"Essays and Appetizers" Event Produces Anthology
"Essays and Appetizers" event gives composition students opportunity to have writings published
In early November, students and faculty from Cedarville University’s Department of English, Literature and Modern Languages participated in the third annual “Essays and Appetizers” event. The event was hosted in conjunction with an essay competition for students in Cedarville’s first-year composition classes.
“The idea for this competition came from the desire to create a positive view of writing on campus,” said Melissa Faulkner, Ph.D., associate professor of English and department chair. “We thought hosting a contest might energize students and help them become more invested in their writing, and it really has done that.”
Students submit essays anonymously, along with a cover letter and a $2 entry fee to help fund the event. “Essays and Appetizers” then brings together students and faculty from the department to read the essays and determine which should be finalists in the competition.
Faculty members on the composition committee then rate the essays in the list of finalists to determine the top three winners. All finalists and other highly ranked essays are included in an anthology for the year; each anthology consists of 21-25 essays.
Both faculty and students benefit from the experience, since students who submit essays can have their work published as undergraduate students and faculty members gain ideas for future writing assignments
Cedarville University’s third annual composition anthology will be published in the summer of 2017 and used as a resource in composition classes for the 2017-2018 academic year.
