Nursing Program Celebrates Graduating Class
School of Nursing honors over 100 graduates in hooding and pinning ceremony
Cedarville University’s School of Nursing will celebrate the academic accomplishments of undergraduate and graduate students at its hooding and pinning ceremony on Friday, May 5, at 2:30 p.m. in Cedarville’s Dixon Ministry Center. Doors open at 2 p.m., and the ceremony is open to family and friends.
During the ceremony, 87 undergraduate nursing students will be “pinned” and 16 graduate nursing students will be “hooded.” The pin is a symbolic expression of welcoming nurses into the profession and the hood denotes scholarly professional achievement.
Nursing students will also be recognized for special honors, such as the leadership award, character award and clinical practice award. Outstanding preceptor excellence awards, honoring those who invested in students’ professional experiences, will also be presented.
“It’s a huge accomplishment, considering how many students are graduating from our nursing program,” said Dr. Angelia Mickle, dean of the school of nursing. “They’re already leaders and ready to be salt and light for Jesus.”
The school of nursing intentionally trains students to be leaders and managers through various courses in its program. The courses help bring Cedarville’s values and philosophies into hospitals across the country and nearby.
“When more nursing graduates stay in the Cedarville area, there’s a possibility of them becoming clinical instructors and preceptors, which is a way they give back and invest in future students,” said Suzanne Lefever, associate professor and assistant dean and director of undergraduate nursing programs. “This empowers students and makes Cedarville nurses more recognizable to potential employers.”
Last year, the school of nursing started its own “surrendering” of the hands tradition, a twist on the traditional “blessing” of the hands, performed at the ceremony’s closing.
“We do this at the end because we want our students to go out and use their hands to impact others for God’s glory,” said Mickle.
