School of Pharmacy leads inter-professional education conference at Wright State
For the third year, Cedarville University’s School of Pharmacy will lead a large inter-professional education (IPE) event focusing on transitions of care at Wright State University’s Nutter Center. The event takes place on March 28, from 1-5 p.m.
Transitions of care refers to the coordination between health care practitioners to provide optimal care as patients move from one level of health care need to another. The event started as a research project by Cedarville University pharmacy students who wanted to understand how to best work with other industry professionals.
During the event, students will participate in two mock scenarios in which the different professions must work together to assess the case, diagnose the problem and prescribe possible solutions. This is the only transitions of care conference that exists with this format.
“These scenarios are designed to elucidate the strengths of each discipline and reveal how each profession can fill in the gaps,” said Andrew Straw, Pharm.D., assistant professor of pharmacy practice and coordinator of the event.
Straw anticipates 170 students will participate in this unique educational event. Students from Wright State University’s Medical School and College of Nursing, Cedarville University’s Schools of Pharmacy and Nursing and the University of Dayton’s Physician Assistant program will participate.
A panel of experts consisting of nurses, physicians and other disciplines will share real-life experiences after each mock scenario.
“The ultimate goal is to create an environment where students feel comfortable utilizing other professions and working as a team,” said Straw.
