Pharmacy Students on Mission Throughout the U.S.
Teams are serving in Appalachia, Arizona, and Clarkston, Georgia.
"These trips are part of the educational experience we want for all of our pharmacy students," noted Dr. Marc Sweeney, dean of the school of the pharmacy. "Providing frontline patient care to diverse populations with compassion is critical to becoming pharmacists who can affect positive change in the 21st century."
— Marc Sweeney
For one of the trips, Martha Morton from Goldsboro, North Carolina; Alaina Spears, from Frazeysburg, Ohio; Stephanie Wu from Peoria, Illinois; Kyrie Johnston from Cedarville, Ohio; Andy Nguyen from Cedarville, Ohio; and Nicole Deitschman from Grandview Heights, Ohio, will conduct healthcare screenings among refugee populations in Clarkston, Georgia.
Clarkston is known as one of the most diverse square miles in the United States because of the high number of immigrant groups that have relocated there.
In Lee County, Kentucky, located in the Appalachian Mountains, Shelby Wright of Dayton, Ohio, and Lizzy Johnston of Centerville, Ohio, will support pharmacy clinical inpatient primary care and dental clinic services in rural areas. They will also lead vaping and immunization presentations at Lee County Vo-Tech High School health classes in Beattyville, Kentucky.
Matthew Swett from Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Riley Larson from Red Wing, Minnesota, will observe and provide pharmacy support in caring for Hopi, Ute, and Navajo patients in remote areas on reservations and in mobile medical vans serving with Winslow Indian Health Care Center in Winslow, Arizona.
