Wind Symphony in Concert on November 21

Dixon Ministry Center in the Jeremiah Chapel is the location for this free event, which is open to the public and follows COVID protocols.

The Wind Symphony at Cedarville University will perform in concert on Saturday, Nov.  21, at 7 p.m. in the Dixon Ministry Center Jeremiah Chapel. This event is free and open to the public.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, Dr. Chester Jenkins, director of wind symphony and assistant professor of music, was challenged to adapt his Wind Symphony group, which is usually made up of 60 musicians. He decided to split the Wind Symphony into nine different groups, including several chamber groups. One of these chamber groups will be performing on November 21. The groups also include flex bands and a brass choir that will also be featured in this concert.

The concert will begin with an Aaron Copland classic, “Fanfare for the Common Man.” Several well-known band composers, such as Frank Ticheli, John Mackey, Jennifer Jolley, and Ryan George, will also have pieces performed in this concert. A chamber group will perform “Waking Angeles” by David Gillingham. The Brass Choir will play Alfred Reed’s “Symphony for Brass and Percussion,” a piece full of lyrical melodies and pounding rhythms.

“The student musicians have worked very hard this semester to put together a concert in a fairly shortened amount of time,” said Jenkins. “The reality is that many of these students have only been together to rehearse their piece just over a dozen times.”
