Cedarville Stories Podcast: Greatness Redefined
Greatest of All Time, or G.O.A.T., is a familiar acronym in the professional sports world. But for Mike Weller, who’s had the chance to work with some of the most talented athletes in the world, greatness is defined in a very different way.
As an associate professor of athletic training, Weller has prepared hundreds of Cedarville students for careers in high school, college, and professional sports. He is also helping lead Cedarville’s program to new heights with the advent of the Master of Athletic Training degree in June 2022.
His career at Cedarville would be cause enough to say, “Well done,” to this instructor and mentor. But Weller has served outside the confines of campus as well, working as a staff athletic trainer for the Cincinnati Bengals training camp since 2011.
He also has worked for the National Football league at Bengals football games alerting team medical staff about potential concussions.
By all earthly accounts, it would be easy to conclude that Mike is a great athletic trainer. But God used a Billy Graham crusade to redefine greatness for him. During that evangelistic event in 2000, the Lord confronted Mike that he had a half-hearted approach to his faith. He agreed, repented, and went forward to rededicate his life to Christ. His view of greatness went through a transformation.
“A great athletic trainer operates with compassion,” he offers during the podcast. “They see a need but then they look for a way to impact that life. As believers, we have the opportunity to act in that healthcare setting to really impact their lives, and that’s changed everything I’ve done.”
