Professor Explores Intersection of Faith and Politics in New Book
Bringing political concerns and the Christian’s response under the authority of Scripture, Duerr contends that a biblical worldview should change how one approaches politics and government.
Duerr, who has published two books and authored more than 30 journal articles, was inspired to write his newest book by a sermon he heard at church. Encouraged by his pastor and department chair, Duerr integrated his extensive work on nationalism with
Scripture.
I see this as the first in a trilogy of books covering different political topics surveying what Scripture has dared to say on various matters,” said Duerr. “It’s an open contribution to the literature both for scholars and laypersons
alike to better wrestle with political questions and go back to God’s word and see what it says.”
"Patriotism and the Cross: A Theology of Nationalism” provides a spectrum of where people can exist in their relationship with governments.
Bringing political concerns and the Christian’s response under the authority of Scripture, Duerr addresses topics such as patriotism, supranationalism, transnationalism and regional identity. And, ultimately, he argues a biblical worldview changes
how one approaches politics and government.
“When we think about our faith, it is global and connects brothers and sisters in Christ across different boundaries,” said Duerr. “The gospel is still relevant today because the church transcends social, cultural and political differences.”
Duerr hopes that the principles in his book will be helpful for generations to come, even in the midst of a rapidly globalizing, ever-changing world. “I’ve tried to be very forward-thinking to give conclusions for the Christian regardless
of where and how things change,” said Duerr. “I want it to be relevant for believers in Christ 100 years from now.”
