Bringing awareness to how social workers can effectively practice outside of the United States is the focus of a collaborative event between Central State University and Cedarville University.
On Thursday, Nov. 16, leaders from both universities will hold a forum with Dr. Kasule Kibirige, chair of the social work department at Uganda Christian University. The event begins at 2:30 p.m. and will be held in the Dixon Ministry Center Recital Hall. This is the first time that the two Greene County social work programs have collaborated on such an important topic with a foreign academic leader.
The 30-minute lecture from Kibirige will focus on his social work career in Uganda.
“The goal of this event is to bring exposure and awareness that social work practice the United States is not always the same as it is in other parts of the world,” said Dr. Michael Sherr, assistant dean for the school of education and social work. “I believe this event will help us expand our diversity of thought when it comes to thinking about social issues, along with bringing the gospel to other parts of the world.”
Cedarville University is also currently partnering with Uganda Christian University, allowing Cedarville students to do a social work internship at a Ugandan agency while taking classes at Uganda Christian University's campus during their senior year.
“The goal of social work is to help people have the best well-being they can regardless of their background,” Sherr said.
