As Mason Buch searched for a summer internship between his junior and senior years at Cedarville University, he found not only help, but genuine support from Cedarville's career services staff.
Buch, a senior from Detroit, Michigan, needed an internship to complete his degree program in sport business management and fulfill his graduation requirements. But he did not know how to secure an internship, so he asked his friend, Cam Arminio, assistant director of career services, for advice.
Buch and Arminio first met on the basketball court playing noon-time games at Cedarville University. When Buch came to Arminio for assistance, Arminio instantly connected him with his colleagues where he works.
Buch’s connection with career services, however, did not end there.
Arminio encouraged Buch to have the career services staff review his resume and help him leverage it on his LinkedIn profile before interviewing with Athletes in Action. His improved resume, now professionally focused, impressed Athletes in Action, a nonprofit ministry in Xenia, Ohio, and they offered him a temporary, full-time role that suited his experience.
“Career services not only helped me find the opportunity,” recalled Buch, “Jeff Reep gave me advice in interviewing and negotiating agreements that were critical to me securing this position. Career services helped me prepare well the internship.”
As Buch’s senior year began, he remained in communication with Arminio and career services as they, together, planned the CU Basketball Tournaments that bring the Cedarville community together to play basketball.
Buch’s role with Athletes in Action last summer was so successful that the organization is bringing him back in May to work on the opening of the John Wooden Family Fieldhouse that is scheduled to open on June 15, 2024. This opportunity will allow Buch to manage sporting events and oversee the new facility.
