Federal direct loans are offered to eligible, degree seeking students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA serves as the application for federal direct student loans. Any eligible, degree seeking student may obtain a federal direct loan as long as they meet every eligibility requirement for the specific direct loan program. The 'type of direct loan' (subsidized, unsubsidized or PLUS) will be determined when the FAFSA is processed and the financial aid package is compiled.
Note the following:
- A subsidized direct loan is only available to eligible undergraduate students who have 'unmet need' when student loans are added to their financial aid package
- Loans are a form of financial aid which must be repaid with interest.
