The movie “Woodlawn” opens October 16 in theaters nationwide, telling the true story of how love and unity overcame hate and division in the early 1970s in Birmingham, Alabama. The story follows football player Tony Nathan and fellow African-American students as they struggled for acceptance after the integration of Woodlawn High School in 1973.
The movie, directed and produced by Jon Erwin and Andrew Erwin, includes the work of several Cedarville University graduates. The Erwin brothers also produced “Moms’ Night Out” and “October Baby.”
“Broadcasting and digital media provided a nice balance of classes with hands-on technical aspects,” said Parker Adams. “Some classes made for challenging debates that allowed me to develop my worldview around my profession, while other classes gave me a taste for the industry and provided me opportunities to develop my skills outside of the classroom.”
Kara Adams’ interest in marketing was honed through rigorous classes in the business department. In her role with “Woodlawn,” she has traveled the country for screenings, building relationships with churches and other organizations to promote the movie.
“Cedarville helped give me a passion for people,” said Kara. “Living in the community and taking part in various events on campus really taught me to go in and get the job done, no matter how small it might seem at the time.”
Bailey, who serves as the chief operating officer and technical director at Red Sky Studios, a post-production company affiliated with the Erwin brothers, worked with a team on all editing and special effects for the movie.
“The classes at Cedarville challenged me in a way that I had never been challenged and pushed me to think about the things I was doing and why I was doing them,” said Bailey.

Parker Adams and his wife, Kara (West) Adams, both 2014 graduates of Cedarville, along with Ben Bailey, a 2009 graduate, worked on the film in a variety of production and post-production roles. Parker Adams handled special effects, Kara Adams marketed the movie and Bailey was involved in film colorization. Each graduate credits their time at Cedarville University with developing their professional skills and strengthening their Christian faith.
