As part of the award, Cape will teach and mentor 14 high school students in an intensive nine-week, college-level art class. In addition, each recipient will receive a $1,000 stipend to create a series of artwork for the Yeck College Artist Fellow Exhibition at the Dayton Art Institute. The exhibit will open on May 7, 2016.
Cape’s submission consisted of several paintings created around the theme of “seasons.” Cape hoped to explore each aspect of life, whether destructive or redemptive, to evoke a deep emotional response from the viewers.
“I have learned a lot of things, but one major aspect was learning how relevant art should be to Christians in particular,” said Cape. “History speaks through art and Christians need to know how to utilize that vital communication tool, which is what I’ll get to do through this fellowship and exhibition.”
Diane Stemper, museum educator and educational initiatives coordinator for the Dayton Art Institute, said that Cape’s artwork presented a sophisticated style the museum desired.
To be considered for the fellowship, students had to submit 10 photos of their personal artwork. Each candidate also submitted a statement about what the pieces represent and an essay about the importance of art education.
“The museum looks for candidates who are ready for the challenge of teaching, have a strong portfolio and are ready to create new artwork worthy of a museum exhibition,” said Stemper. “Christa’s portfolio rose to the top quickly, and we are delighted to have her as a 2016 Yeck College Artist Fellow.”
