by Public Relations Staff

Kim Ahlgrim, director of academic enrichment at Cedarville University, has been named the 2016 “Member of the Year” by the National Tutoring Association (NTA). Ahlgrim received the award at the NTA’s National Conference earlier this month in Tampa, Florida.

The NTA recognized Ahlgrim for her leadership of The Cove, the university’s academic enrichment center, as well as her work as a national speaker in academic coaching and for being an academic  consultant  for a number of other colleges and universities. In addition, Ahlgrim teamed with Deidre Sizer, tutoring and office coordinator, to present a session on think tanks at the NTA Conference.

“Deidre Sizer does an excellent job in managing the ever-growing tutoring program through matching students with tutors and creating a loving academic environment,” said Ahlgrim.

Thanks to a cutting-edge approach to peer tutoring, The Cove has been recognized as one of the top academic enrichment centers in the country by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD).

“Our students form powerful relationships through peer tutoring. They learn about leadership, getting into someone’s life, teaching, and servanthood,” said Ahlgrim. “The ability to connect with others makes our tutors different and makes them stronger professionally.”

The Cove’s success can be seen through Cedarville’s 97 percent career placement rate and 73 percent graduation rate. The national graduation rate for NCAA II institutions is 49 percent.

“We want others to look at our programs and see we’re doing something great. We love sharing our techniques with other universities on how to build academic support systems where students feel welcome,” said Ahlgrim. “This is a ministry more than a job.  As we pray for our students and tutors, we’ve continued to seek excellence and reflect the character of Christ.”

The National Tutoring Association is an international academic coaching organization with over 11,000 members from fourteen countries. Formed in 1992, the NTA is the oldest and largest professional association dedicated to tutoring, With the goal of helping students achieve, the NTA seeks to maintain high standards for tutoring practice, while also researching the how tutoring can be more effective.
