The academic rigor at Cedarville University prepares students to pursue and complete often-prestigious internships in multiple disciplines. Nicholas Rudy, a second-year professional pharmacy student, will work at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, after he was awarded a highly competitive summer internship.
According to information from the Mayo Clinic, 10 to 13 individuals are selected for the 10-week program; Rudy will be one of eight in-patient hospital interns. In-patient interns fill prescriptions, monitor the effects of medicine on patients and work with physicians to ensure patients receive the best treatment.
“Nicholas’ internship continues to demonstrate how diligent students are in the school of pharmacy,” said Dr. Aleda Chen, assistant dean and assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Cedarville University. “As our faculty engages students in all aspects, it’s encouraging to see how prepared students are for advanced positions.”
Rudy is not only looking forward to in-patient hospital experiences and clinical opportunities, but also getting to know other interns and pharmacists, interacting with patients and sharpening his skills.
“I’m excited to care for patients with a holistic approach throughout this internship,” said Rudy. “Not only am I responsible for the patients’ physical needs, but for their emotional, mental and spiritual needs as well.”
For Rudy, the pursuit of excellence demonstrated by the faculty members isn’t lost on him. He understands preparation for a career in pharmacy begins with excellent teaching.
“I really appreciate the biblical integration I receive in my classes, which enlightens the way I approach patient care. The way we interact with people is different because we have Christ,” said Rudy. “The faculty in the school of pharmacy have done a tremendous job of preparing us for our career and life’s pursuits.”
