Cedarville professor Dan DeWitt meets weekly with students to talk theology and apologetics

DeWitt wakes students' minds with "Mere Caffeination"

by Chloie Benton, Public Relations Writer

On any given morning at Cedarville University, you’ll find sleepy undergraduate students seeking a java jolt at Rinnova and nearby Stinger's cafe in the Stevens Student Center. But for students who show up on Thursdays, a blast of soul caffeine comes with their coffee.

Every Thursday at 9 a.m., Dr. Dan DeWitt, professor of applied theology and apologetics, leads students on a journey into “Mere Caffeination,” his weekly apologetics talk. During the meetings, DeWitt and students discuss various arguments and defenses of the Christian faith.

“Mere Caffeination” is inspired by the classic Christian apologetics book “Mere Christianity,” written by C.S. Lewis. The meeting is open to students and faculty members interested in apologetic discussions, with topics ranging from arguments against Christianity to Christian perspectives on recent world events.

DeWitt seeks to provide an opportunity for students to relate the gospel to everything that is taking place in the world today through truthful conversations. “I want students to love the gospel more and be encouraged by the power of the gospel,” he said.

“Students need to think biblically through the issues and questions our culture is facing so they will be able to hold the Bible in one hand, the newspaper in the other, and know how to properly interpret them both, and how they relate to one another, said DeWitt.”

Discussions center around current events. Visiting professor Sam Allberry; Dr. Anthony Moore, biblical research and multicultural recruiter; and Dr. J.R. Gilhooly, assistant professor of theology and philosophy, have attended as guest facilitators.
