This winter, when nursing students from subtropical Taiwan visit chilly Ohio, it will be more than an educational experience. It will be an event that could transform the lives of students.
Four students and one professor from Dayeh University in Changhua County, Taiwan will visit Cedarville University for a cross-cultural experience. The international students will participate in programs in the school of nursing from Jan. 15 to Feb. 16, 2019.
Cedarville has partnered with Dayeh for the past four years. Dr. Chu-Yu Huang, professor of nursing at Cedarville, connected with the dean of Dayeh at a conference, sparking the cross-cultural partnership.
Huang was born and raised in Taiwan, but she came to the U.S. to study nursing at the University of Dubuque in Iowa. After joining the Cedarville faculty in 2001 to teach nursing, Huang has combined her education and faith in strategic ways. The partnership with Dayeh University is one example.
Because of the partnership, the Taiwanese students will have a chance to experience American culture and learn about the U.S. health care system.
They will observe clinicals, attend nursing classes, interview nursing faculty and participate in campus activities with Cedarville students. They will stay in off-campus apartments near campus.
The students will also participate in nonacademic activities coordinated by Huang’s nursing colleagues. In past years, nursing faculty members have escorted students on a trip to Chicago, taken them to football games and invited them to their homes for dinners.
After their visit, the Taiwanese students will create a video to reflect on their experience. Last year, the students created a video with the Christian song “Lion and the Lamb” as background music. According to Huang, they ended the video with the message, “Because of you, we know what love is.”
Huang hopes that the students who visit in January will have a similar positive experience. Her goal is that the Taiwanese students and faculty member will know that the Christian faith is the centerpiece of a Cedarville education, have a chance to learn about faith in Jesus Christ and see Christ’s love through the relationships they build with Cedarville students and faculty members. “I always want to encourage people to show them who Jesus Christ really is,” she said.
