How To Make Good Decisions: Insights From Romans 12:1–2
Making decisions can be challenging, especially when trying to discern what aligns with God’s will. Romans 12:1–2 offers profound guidance on how to navigate this process. Let’s explore how transformation, biblical principles, wise counsel, prayer, and evaluating opportunities can help us make decisions that honor God.
Transform Your Mind
Romans 12:1–2 urges us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This transformation isn’t just about changing our thinking but about a deep, spiritual renewal that aligns our desires with God’s will. When our minds are renewed, we gain clarity on what God’s will is for our lives. This transformation helps us discern what is “good, pleasing, and perfect” (Romans 12:2).
Understand Key Principles of God’s Will
- Understanding God’s will involves recognizing that it is:
- Findable: God’s will is discoverable through Scripture and prayer.
- Possible: Following God’s will is feasible with His guidance.
- Good: God’s will benefits everyone, not just ourselves.
- Recoverable: If we stray, there is always a path back to God’s will.
Deuteronomy 29:29 reminds us that “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever.” While some aspects of God’s plan remain hidden, He has provided clear guidance in His Word.
Seek Biblical Guidance
The Bible is our primary source for making informed decisions. As 2 Timothy 3:17 states, one reason God gives us the Bible is “so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Scripture offers principles and examples that help us navigate complex choices. Additionally, Proverbs provides wisdom on seeking counsel. Proverbs 11:14 says, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.” Consulting wise, experienced Christians can offer valuable insights. It’s important to seek advice from those who have walked further along the path of faith and to consider multiple perspectives.
Engage in Prayer and Listen to the Holy Spirit
Philippians 4:6 encourages us to “present your requests to God.” Prayer is crucial in decision-making, helping us align our desires with God’s will. It’s essential to pray consistently and ask the Holy Spirit for discernment, ensuring our choices are not merely self-serving. Psalm 37:4 assures us, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” As we seek God, our desires will align more closely with His.
Evaluate Opportunities
God often opens doors to guide us. Revelation 3:7 states, “What he opens no one can shut.” Assess whether practical opportunities align with God’s guidance and whether they are genuinely available to you. Colossians 4:3 reminds us that “God will open a door for our message.” Pay attention to these open doors, as they may be a sign of God’s direction.
Action Steps
- Consult Scripture: Use the Bible to seek principles and examples relevant to your decision.
- Seek Wise Counsel: Reach out to experienced, godly advisors for their perspective.
- Pray Continuously: Involve God in every step of your decision-making process.
- Explore Desires: God will align your desires with His, so do not be afraid to follow what you want to do.
- Evaluate Opportunities: Look for practical signs that confirm God’s guidance.
By following these steps, you can make decisions with confidence, knowing that God’s will is accessible and recoverable. Embrace the journey of decision-making with faith and trust in His plan for your life.
