The God of Second Chances - Jonah 3:1-10 — 8/21/2024 10:00 AM

Speaking from Jonah 3:1-10, Pastor Philip Miller proclaims God's empowering grace, sovereign rule, and proactive mercy. Pastor Miller serves as Senior Pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago, IL, and is our speaker for the 2024 Fall Bible Conference.

Notes

The Extent of God’s mercy and the Blessing of Second Chances Given by God

God is a God of second chances. In Jonah 3, God presented Jonah with a second chance. Jonah ran away from God’s calling, yet God still gave him another chance to do what was right.

Pastor Philip Miller paints a picture of what God was trying to convey to Jonah by describing, "God is saying, ‘all these people of Nineveh, the people I love, I am putting them in your hands Jonah. I am entrusting them to you. I am trusting you to get it right now that my grace has set you free.’”

God’s Grace Is Empowering

Not only did God forgive Jonah, but He showed him redemption. God presented him with the opportunity to right his wrongs and fulfill his calling from the Lord.

The Sovereignty of God

The Ninevites heard God's warning and declared that He is Lord. The only person who didn’t declare the sovereignty of the Lord was Jonah, until the Lord reached out to him and provided him with another chance.

Proactive Mercy

God is eager to forgive. He was quick to forgive the Ninevites for their sin, just as he was with Jonah. Pastor Miller emphasized this theme of God’s eagerness to forgive by stating, “God moves heaven and Earth to reach us. If you think God went overboard to reach the Ninevites, just think of what he did to reach you and me.”

Jesus died on the cross and took on our sin, in our place, so that whoever believes in Him could have everlasting life. God is very willing to forgive and ready to invite you into the family of God. No matter who you are or what you’ve done, God offers forgiveness. Come home to the Father. Jesus already paid your debt and is waiting for you to come to Him.
