More than 200 high school musicians from around the country will hone their musical talents at Cedarville University’s 31st annual Music Showcase. From February 16-18, students will learn and perform challenging compositions under the direction of Cedarville’s music faculty.
The Music Showcase will conclude with an Honor Concert at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, in the recently renovated 3,400-seat Jeremiah Chapel in the Dixon Ministry Center. The concert, performed by the showcase musicians, is free and open to the public.
Students will participate in rehearsals and view performances by the Cedarville jazz band on Thursday, and ensembles on Friday.
“It’s been a resounding success each year. It really gives the students a taste of collegiate life,” said Lyle Anderson, Ph.D., senior professor of music and director of concert chorale and men’s glee club. “We do everything to the honor of the Lord here at Cedarville, so it speaks volumes to them to have people treat them with respect.”
Students who attend must be nominated by their band, choir or orchestra directors and undergo an extensive university selection process.
The Honor Concert will showcase the honor band, honor choir and honor strings. Chet Jenkins, M.M., interim director of symphonic band and jazz band and studio instructor for music and worship, will conduct the honor band; Anderson will direct the honor choir; and Carlos Elias, M.M., professor of music and director of university orchestra, will conduct the honor strings.
“Attending the Music Showcase as a high school student was a great experience for me,” said Gracie Bennett, a junior music education major from Fishers, Indiana. “It was incredible to sit under the teaching of collegiate music professors and get a glimpse of the heart of the music and worship department. I loved experiencing the college atmosphere by getting to know professors, college students and fellow musicians.”
