Cedarville’s school of pharmacy, school of nursing and University Medical Services (UMS) will host a flu shot clinic on September 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for nursing and pharmacy students in the Health Sciences Center. Students will receive flu shots that are required as they work in medical situations where they could be exposed to the flu virus.
In previous years, students would sign up on separate days to get the flu vaccine from UMS. Cedarville hopes to streamline the process with this one-day clinic.
“The school of pharmacy held our first tuberculosis test day last spring and had the school of nursing partner with UMS to give the tests to our pharmacy students,” said Natalie Reineke, coordinator of practice experience in the school of pharmacy. “It went very well and made it much easier for the professional pharmacy students to complete one of their mandatory school requirements. With that success, we suggested a flu clinic in the same format.”
The idea originated when Reineke visited the pharmacy school at the University of Rhode Island. The school had a single day where nursing students gave the required tuberculosis tests to pharmacy students.
The clinic will create an opportunity for pharmacy and nursing students to administer the flu vaccines to their students. Pharmacy students will also be involved in processing paperwork and payments. The event will be overseen by UMS.
Currently, 386 students are registered to receive their flu vaccines, but many more are anticipated and the clinic has opened up the scheduled to accommodate both department’s faculty as well.
