Guidelines for Writing and Style
Guidelines for Writing and Style
Cedarville University strives to maintain a consistent image through all printed and online materials. All Cedarville materials should follow the guidelines given in The Associated Press Stylebook (AP) and should follow the spellings provided in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. If AP or Webster gives more than one acceptable style or spelling on a particular matter, use the preferred treatment, which is usually listed first.
The order for editing and proofreading decisions at Cedarville should be as follows:
- Legality (official names, trademarks, etc.)
- Cedarville University Style Guide
- The Associated Press Stylebook
- Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary
Style guides are by nature living documents that occasionally need to be updated. Please contact us with any questions concerning usage or any ideas for consideration.
Brand Messaging
Adequately describing Cedarville University's personality and culture is a challenging, but important task. We seek to be authentic, consistent, and bold when we share Cedarville messages with a wide range of stakeholders. To support this effort, we have created a marketing messaging map that outlines significant statements and descriptions that guide our communication to prospective undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni and donors.
